Extract the sales tax amount from a total price that already includes tax. Enter the total and tax rate to find the original pre-tax price and tax portion.
When you have a receipt total that includes tax, the reverse formula extracts the original price: Pre-tax price = Total / (1 + Tax Rate). For example, if your receipt shows $107.00 and the tax rate is 7%, the pre-tax price is $107.00 / 1.07 = $100.00, and the tax portion is $7.00. This is essential for expense reporting, bookkeeping, and reconciling receipts where the tax is not listed as a separate line item.
Reverse calculation is useful when a receipt shows only the total paid, when splitting tax-inclusive pricing for accounting, when claiming business expense deductions, or when reconciling credit card statements against individual purchases.
The formula is: Pre-tax price = Total / (1 + Tax Rate). The tax amount is: Total - Pre-tax price. For example, $53.50 total at 7% tax: $53.50 / 1.07 = $50.00 pre-tax, $3.50 tax.
