Marketplace unit economics are uniquely complex — you acquire two sides. GMV (Gross Merchandise Volume) = total transaction value processed. Net Revenue = GMV × Take Rate (your commission %). Take Rate ranges: Fiverr/Upwork: 20-27%, Airbnb: 14-16%, Uber: 20-25%, Amazon: 8-15%. Contribution Margin = Net Revenue − Payment Processing − Supply Incentives − Demand Acquisition Cost allocated to transaction. Healthy marketplaces target CM positive by transaction year 2.
GMV (Gross Merchandise Value) is the total value of transactions processed through the marketplace. Revenue is what the marketplace keeps — typically GMV × Take Rate. For example, if GMV is $10M and take rate is 15%, revenue is $1.5M.
